I watched this for the first time yesterday morning. I am still having moments of fear throughout the day and the half since I first watched this from Brian screaming "WHO ARE YOU" over and over after turning and seeing someone there who was out of frame. What makes all of this even worse is that the only lists of in-network providers that you have access to are provided by the insurance company and they have ZERO requirements to be honest or keep the list updated. They also may not allow you to filter results by your specific plan, but instead list providers that they work with, sure, but are not in-network for your coverage plan. This, in combination, means MOST insurance plans have HUNDREDS of service providers listed as being in-network that cancelled their agreements with the insurance company at some point, sometimes MANY, MANY YEARS ago (to the point no one working at the provider remembers EVER taking that insurance), and no longer provide in-network care. The only way to check this is to call each prospective provider individually and give them detailed information on your insurance/prospective insurance plan. Information, like ID numbers, that you might not even have until AFTER you have enrolled in the insurance. This means that if you know you are having to switch to an insurance that your current doctors are not on or are moving to a new place and need all new doctors, the only way to be sure you will have providers that are going to be covered that do not require you to be on half-year long waiting lists and or drive across your entire state to get to is to spend DAYS, during office hours, cold calling healthcare offices and hoping they can give you a straightforward and accurate answer as to whether or not they do in fact still take that specific insurance. And every single year, these agreements can be re-negotiated. So even if you do all of this and find all of the doctors that you need in-network and stay on the same insurance, you have no guarantee that your doctor will still accept that insurance the next year and they may not even tell you about this change making your doctor out-of-network until you actually have an appointment with said doctor, at which point you may be outside of the open enrollment period. And having your doctor and insurance plan split up does not count as a QLE. Also, this is illegal now (although I'm not sure how well it's being enforced), but previously, you could be assigned a doctor who was out-of-network while at a fully in-network ER and hospital system even after providing all of your insurance information- a situation where you have absolutely no say over what doctor you get to see - with no disclosure or warning, and you would be billed out-of-network for/by that doctor. This happened to me when my gallbladder decided to grow a walnut sized stone child for itself as an act of suicide almost a decade ago. To make this complete and utter scam even scam-ier, the bill the out-of-network doctor sent was 1) on the stationary of the in-network hospital's ER I went to even though this doctor was not officially affiliated with that hospital (not in their doctor network, which was also in-network, and thus why the doctor was out of network) and 2) was identical to the amount I was set to be charged by the hospital itself through my pre-deductible co-insurance rate based on the costs I was told from my ER visit and 3) was sent out MONTHS ahead of my actual ER bill and had a payment due date only two weeks from when the bill was post-dated and 4) did not specify what services the bill was for. All of which led me, in all my youth, optimism, and woeful naivety, to believe I was paying my ER copay with no idea I was being "balance billed" and that that nearly $1600-- almost a full month's salary for me at the time-- was in addition to my ER costs and was not going towards my deductible or out-of-pocket-max. All in, my gallbladder's demon spawn cost me approximately $10,000 despite my "full-coverage" insurance and its supposed $7500 out of pocket maximum. The back and forth between my providers and insurance that went on for almost another year after the fact caused ONE bill, for less then $500, to go to collections before I had a chance to sort out all of the inaccuracies with what I owed, and because I was young and hadn't taken on loans or a credit card at the time, it initially absolutely TANKED my credit score and left a dent in it that I could do nothing about for nearly 7 YEARS, which negatively effected both my housing and job applications. PEOPLE, out in the world beyond this absolute fucking hell-scape we call the US, DO NOT LET THEM PRIVATIZE YOUR INSURANCE. DO NOT LET THEM. DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO NOT LET THEM. My experiences are absolute MILK-TOAST compared to what a LOT of people here have to deal with to get even basic healthcare and still, the second most common surgery in the world after having an appendectomy almost ruined me financially despite my having what, by all accounts, was considered better-than-average health insurance for someone of my age and social class in this country. And, AND, this is AFTER the situation around insurance in the US improved SIGNIFICANTLY over what it was before "Obamacare." I only had insurance AT ALL because of the ACA marketplace, and previously would have had much higher premiums if I could even get anything at all because of having unrelated chronic, genetic illnesses which used to be grounds to hike up an individual's costs (and will likely be again if Trump is put back in power since his plans take away regulations around this). The bill for the hospital that hosted my ultimate gallbladder surgery, alone-- before my insurance payout-- was over $25,000. For a routine, outpatient procedure. Not including the surgeon's fees. Not including the anesthesiologist's fees. Not including the initial ER visit, the specialists visit, the ultrasounds and CT scan, the blood tests, the pre-surgery physical, the routine post-op visits, the ER visit I needed when my right lung collapsed two days post-op and its related bloodwork and imaging, the urgent care visit when I had an allergic reaction to my dissolving stitches dissolving, the medications I was prescribed, etc, etc. That one single piece of my healthcare needs for this one single health event in my 20s, if I didn't have my insurance through the affordable care act, was more than I was taking home in a year working 45-50 hours a week with no PTO.
